Our band began as the Invercargill Garrison Band in 1867. What we did before the wireless. Prior to 1900 there were 45 brass bands in Southland from which the Invercargill bands would draw players as they came into the city for work. About the 1920's onward the Invercargill Garrison Band had four very strong Boys Band. Players from this group were promoted to the senior band as required. Boys Bands evolved into the Junior band, and then in 1980 to the Auxiliary band. Alex Lithgow, writer of the infamous Invercargill March was one of the Early Garrison Members.
