Auxiliary Band
Our learner group – nurturing the next generation of brass musicians
The Auxiliary Band provides a welcoming and encouraging environment for people of all ages to learn a brass instrument. Whether you're picking up a cornet for the first time or returning after a break, the band is open to anyone interested in learning.
Members of the Auxiliary Band often progress into the senior Ascot Park Hotel Brass, and many have gone on to represent the region at national level competitions or youth bands. The band forms a vital part of our musical ecosystem, helping develop the skills and confidence of new brass players in Invercargill.

Kath Herman – Years of Dedication
For many years, the Auxiliary Band was led by the incredible Kath Herman, who fostered a positive and inclusive space where new players could grow. Under her guidance, countless players gained the confidence and skills to join the senior band or pursue musical opportunities beyond Southland.
Kath's impact on the Invercargill brass community has been enormous, and we’re deeply grateful for her leadership, patience, and encouragement through the years. After decades of service, Kath stepped down in 2024 — but her legacy continues.
Now Led by Aaron Herman
Today, the Auxiliary Band is in good hands with Kath’s son, Aaron Herman, continuing the family tradition of leadership and mentorship. Aaron brings a modern approach and strong performance experience, continuing the mission to support, challenge, and inspire new players.
